served as the residence of the royal family after Topkapi Palace.
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey,
used it as a presidential palace and passed away here in 1938.
Today, Dolmabahce Palace functions as a museum.
Next on the tour is Ciragan Palace. The name "Ciragan" means
light, and this secondary palace of the 19th century underwent
extensive renovations after a major fire in 1910. Now, it operates
as a hotel, leased from the government for 49 years.
